Been awhile since I updated this blog. Sorry about that. 2 events for you all to keep your eye on:
First, our May split will be May 29 at the River St Ale House. Both small bottle splits are closed at this point, so we hope to see you at the Ale House even if you're not participating.
Second, our summer party will take place July 11 at Brian's house in Dickson City. Here is the Beer Advocate listing: http://beeradvocate.com/events/info/24887. Please let me know if you plan to come so we can get a headcount. More details to come closer to the event.

Upcoming Events
On Saturday Johnny is hosting a get together at Coopers in Scranton. http://beeradvocate.com/events/info/22592. Join him if you can.
Next, our next get together will be Friday, March 27 at the River St Ale House. This is a new one, and there are 2 things to know about it. First, we can do a split if people would like. It's fast approaching, however, so please let me know by Tuesday of next week if you would like to do a split. We'll then get one planned among interested parties. Second, Nick Kipp, who has been a member for almost 2 years, is moving to Saudi Arabia for a new job in April. This will be Nick's last event, so join us to send him off.
Third, we are still planning our Central PA Pubcrawl for April 4th. http://beeradvocate.com/events/info/22380. We've settled on our itinerary, which will be Selin's Grove, followed by Old Forge, followed by One Guy. I'm still looking into some bus options, but our backup will be to have designated drivers. So if you'd like to nominate yourself or a sacrificial loved one, please let me know.
Last, we will do our 3rd Stockertown Split in April. For those of you who haven' t participated in a Stockertown split or don't know what it is, basically 12 people put in $101 and then we go to Stockertown Beverage and buy as much good beer as we can (the other $12 is for gas). There are always lots of interesting beers in these splits - last time I had only previously tried 2 of the 15 or so that we ended up with. You get a mix of small bottle stuff (2 bottles each) and big bottle stuff (1 bottle each) in a range of styles. We will do the shopping on Saturday, April 18 and the distribution on Friday, April 24, most likely at the Ale House (it's the easiest place for the distribution end of this). If you would like to participate let me know and then plan to get me your money by cash or check no later than Mar 27.

Christmas Party Recap
The Christmas Party was Saturday and if you missed it, you missed a great time. Thanks especially to Brian and his wife for hosting, and to all who came for the food, beer and fun.
The highlight of the night was definitely the Short's Smores Stout, not because it was the best beer but because it doubled as a pyrotechnics show. According to the brewer's instructions, the way to consume it is to toss a freshly burned marshmallow into the beer. In keeping with our efforts to always follow directions, Kevin lined up the glasses and put the marshmallows on a serving fork, Brian lit them on fire with a Burnzomatic torch, and a third person (I can't recall who; I'll update if someone reminds me) held the glasses while Kevin scraped the charred marshmallows off the
fork. It was quite a process, and really added nothing at all to the beer, but was quite a lot of fun nonetheless. Check back for a video, coming soon.
The strangest beer of the night would have to be Short's Imperial Spruce India Pilsner, which literally smelled and tasted like a Christmas tree. If you didn't get a chance to try it, just eat a branch off your tree and you'll get the same effect.
The tap lineup included Paulaner Hefe-Weizen, Kasteel Bruin, Founder's Brea
kfast Stout (complete with hard to find tap handle), 2006 Samichlaus Bier, Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA (complete with even harder to find tap handle), 2008 Troegs Mad Elf, and Kevin's homebrewed Space Herpes Stout.
The growler and bottle lineup was also very impressive, and included Old Forge Brewing's T-Rail Pale Ale and Endless Summer Ale, Selin's Grove Peche Saison and Stealth Triple, One Guy Brewing Atomic Punk IPA, Penn Kaiser Pils, Short's Smores Stout, Central Wat
ers Coffee Stout, Saint Arnold's Devine Reserve #7, Boulevard Saison, Port Ne Goeien, St Bernardus Triple, Short's Imperial Spruce India Pilsner and Ginger in the Rye, Big Rock Chophouse Saison, New Glarus Apple Ale, 2000 La Trappe Quad, Terrapin Side Project RoggenRauchBier and Gamma Ray, 2007 Deschutes the Abyss, Aect Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock (for the newbs), Dogfish Head Zwaanend'ale, and the nighcapper, Trappist Westvleteren 12.

Polls
The results in the polls from the September split are settled, although there were not enough votes in the Big Bottle Favorites Split poll to fairly judge a winner. For the others, however, the winner of the Best Beer for the Fall Seasonal split is Brad with Troegs Dead Reckoning, while the Abita Pecan Harvest was the clear loser. Sorry Beki, you owe Brad a beer. In the Favorite Beer Small Bottle split, I'm the winner with La Fin Du Monde, while Paul's Unibroue Ephemere was Godawful and gets the unwated distinctioon. You definitely owe me a beer after making me drink that crap, Paul.
Polls are now up for best and worst beers from the October Stockertown split. No one wins anything, but vote anyway if you participated.
